The living costumes were the first project that started to work between creative disciplines and utilise technology to push and transform what is possible with living horticulture.
Nature, mythology, and storytelling
At Unseen Between, we are driven by the deep connection between nature, mythology, and storytelling. Many ancient cultures personified nature, reflecting our relationship with the environment through symbolic figures and narratives. Inspired by this, we began creating Grass Men—living costumes grown from flowers, flora, and grass. These wearable ecosystems take months to cultivate and form a symbiotic bond between the wearer and the natural world
A team of collaborators
Over the past 12 years, we have refined this practice, collaborating with horticulturists, creative technologists, and scientists to explore new possibilities. Each costume is part living sculpture, part performance that blends and mysticism and absurdity to reimagine our relationship with nature.
Grassman International
Building on this, Grassman International extends the project to communities worldwide. By providing a simple living costume kit, we enable participants to grow their own suits using local plants, making each creation a unique reflection of its environment. More than just an artistic endeavour, this project fosters collaboration, cultural expression, and environmental awareness, allowing communities to shape their own performances and messages to the world.
